Denver got a huge pat on the back from Forbes magazine recently. We made it into their top ten "Best Cities for Working Mothers." They started with the 50 largest cities in the US but then went with the premise that different mothers want different things. They looked at schools, medical care, and safety but also branched out into job opportunities and potential earnings along with cost of living and more. So some cities that you would think to be family friendly like Salt Lake City actually fell in the ranking because of lack of child care options. Being a stay at home mom sounds like a wonderful career choice. No more rushing out of the house just to sit in morning traffic. Wearing whatever you want. An end to all the meetings and reports, more time with the kids and think of all the projects around the house that you can get done. But that is just fantasy. The reality of a stay at home mom is more daunting. There is no vacation time, no sick days, and you are not in charge of your own schedule, the kids rule that area. And no matter how much you do in a day, there is always more. More laundry, more dirty dishes, more vacuuming, more toys on the floor, and more food to prepare.
Mom loved those hand made gifts when you were a kid. The pot holder made of clay, the macaroni necklace with glitter, the painted flower pot, but you’ve grown up and so should your gifts. When showing mom how much she means this weekend, make sure you don’t send the wrong message with a bad gift. What is a bad gift? Read on…
An Exercise DVD. What message are you sending? Even if mom is starting a diet, or is an exercise super star, this DVD says you don’t think she looks her best. Talk about an ego blow from one of the most important people in her life! Unless mom tells you she wants this DVD, including the exact title, this is a horrible idea for a gift.
