At a time when we are struggling to balance the bank account with the rising cost of gas and food, would you believe that Ford has car that gets 65 miles per gallon? But we can’t get it in the United States. The 2009 Ford Fiesta ECOnomic goes on sale in November only in Europe. It is sporty, seats five, has a navigation system and did I mention it get 65 miles to a gallon. Here is the article from Business-Week.
Toyota and Honda are giddy that Ford has decided not to bring its stylish ECOnomic to the US at a time when American consumers are looking for a fuel savvy auto. But why would Ford make what appears to be a bone headed decision? One word-Diesel. Only 3%of cars in the US run on Diesel, while half the cars sold in Europe last year do. And taxes targeting commercial trucks put up to an additional $1 per gallon of the domestic cost of Diesel. But current Diesel motors, despite smelling bad, are as clean or cleaner than gas burners and they are 30 percent more fuel efficient. Price is also and issue. The Fiesta ECOnomic is made in Europe and would sell for around $25,700 here in the States. With the Prius going for $24,000 Ford doesn’t think it can compete at that price point. What do you think? Would you buy a fuel efficient American car if it cost a bit more than the foreign option? And Ford is building a new plant in Mexico to manufacture the new version of the gas powered Fiesta, but they have deemed it too expensive to make that plant build Diesel motors as well.
