As the weather warms, parties on the patio become more common. But how do you watch those calories while still enjoying a drink or two? Here are some great summer cocktails that are lo-cal, well kind of. And remember the smaller the serving the fewer the calories, so just say no to those glasses the size of fish bowls.
Strawberry Daiquiri
Calories: 220 to 320
Normally this cocktail is made with light rum, lime juice, sugar, frozen Strawberries with a possible shot of Triple Sec, or Strawberry Schnapps. To cut the calories, drop the sugar, schnapps, or triple sec. Also make sure you use only one ounce of rum. If you need to sweeten the taste use zero calorie sweetener.
Mimosa
Calories: 120 to 220
This is a great daytime drink. Not too heavy, not too sweet, and refreshing. To cut the calories order a glass of champagne and then add a few splashes of orange juice (it’s full of calories), or create a Bellini and use a dollop of peach nectar in the bottom of the glass before adding the champagne and skip the OJ. If you are making these at home for a party, try low-cal orange juice.
Bloody Mary
Calories: 140 to 200
This is a brunch favorite, and a great hangover cure. Many people love the spicy kick from Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and hot sauce. To lower the calorie count use only one ounce of vodka and low sodium tomato juice.
Sangria
Calories: 160 to 250
This seems to pop up at every summer party but be careful. Sangria can be healthy or packed with hidden calories. It is all in the way it is made, too much alcohol, fruit juice, sugar, so make sure you ask how it was made. Cut the calories by only having small glasses packed with ice.
White Wine Spritzer
Calories: 90 to 140
If you are serious about the calorie counting, this is your drink! Wine, club soda, ice, and a twist of lime. The only way to curb cals here is to up the soda to wine ratio.
Cosmopolitan
Calories: 220 to 300
This might be the reason those women from Sex in the City were so thin. Normally this is made with Cointreau or another orange flavored liquor, along with vodka, syrup, cranberry juice, and lime. To make this even lower-cal exchange the orange flavored liquor for one tablespoon of orange juice.
Appletini
Calories: 180 to 300
A sweet twist on the Martini that is made with vodka, apple schnapps, and sweet and sour mix. Drop the sweet and sour, and no sugar or caramel on the glass rim. If making them at home, look for a low sugar apple syrup.
