I’m sure your parents told you “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and they were right. Kids who start the day with a good meal do better in school. They have more energy, concentration and focus. They exhibit fewer behavioral problems. Have an easier time maintaining a healthy weight and meeting their daily nutritional requirements.
But is it realistic to believe your kids will sit at the breakfast table every morning? Probably not. On those days you need to send them off with breakfast in hand, pick things that fit into a plastic zipper bag. Think nuts, sliced apple, raisins, dry cereal, or cheese and crackers. It really doesn’t have to be a breakfast food. Peanut butter and Jelly is fine because what you really want is for them to eat it.
There are three things to look for when picking out that breakfast food. Healthy fat like Omega-3 (kids who eat more show better short term memory). Fiber and protein, because it will keep the kids going until lunch. Watch the sugar, just like you and I, if we eat something with lots of sugar we have tons of energy right away and then crash when the sugar is gone.
Sure in a perfect world all of us would have time to sit together and have a healthy well balanced breakfast each morning, but that isn’t always the case. These are just a few tips to help you manage your hectic schedule and give your kids a jump start on the day.
