Back Pain is one of the most common complaints heard by physicians and nearly four out of five people will have back pain at some point in their life. Unfortunately the exact cause of the pain can be difficult to determine. Back pain can develop because of a muscle strain, poor posture, pressure on a nerve, an injury, overuse, or muscle disorders. Doctors recommend a physical exam when you have lingering back pain but it may not reveal the cause.
Most back pain is the result of a muscle strain and can be treated with rest and a combination of pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs. Physical therapy is often prescribed so you can learn proper body mechanics and to improve strength in the abdomen.
Many times back pain will respond to treatment but sleeping on your back, using a firm mattress or even the floor can help. Ice or heat applied to the problem area can also sooth the pain. Call your health care provider or one of the doctors at The Medical Center of Aurora and Centennial Medical Plaza if the pain lasts longer than a week.
